WESTERN MACEDONIA · LAKESIDE STORIES

Kastoria

Lake reflections, old mansions and a quieter northern chapter.

Kastoria is a change of pace from the familiar island itinerary. Stay for the lake light, old neighbourhoods and a slower sequence of short walks. The peninsula setting is part of the pleasure, with views that change as you move around the shore.

Kastoria occupies a peninsula in Lake Orestiada, so water remains close even when the streets climb away from the shore. Its older quarters preserve the architecture of a town enriched by the processing and trade of fur, while numerous Byzantine churches reveal another history of patronage and religious life. The lake circuit and the districts of Doltso and Apozari connect those stories through a strongly defined landscape of slopes, houses and waterfront.

Suggested stay: 2 nights. Adapt the pace to your interests.

Lake Orestiada

Lake Orestiada shapes Kastoria’s urban form, surrounding the peninsula and opening changing views back towards the town. The shoreline moves between more built-up stretches, tree-lined sections and the slopes behind the houses. That variety makes the lake more than a distant backdrop: it determines the relationship between neighbourhoods and the direction of the views. Reflections, birdlife and the surrounding mountains add a different scale from the narrow streets, while the town remains visible as a settlement closely fitted to the water.

Enjoy a waterside walk and watch the changing reflections. Keep a respectful distance from wildlife.

Doltso

Doltso preserves substantial houses associated with Kastoria’s prosperous fur merchants. Many of its historic mansions date from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, expressing wealth through their size, internal organisation and treatment of the street façade. The smaller lanes between them reveal how these large residences fitted into a compact neighbourhood near the lake. Looking at the buildings together makes their social history clearer: they were parts of an inhabited commercial town, rather than isolated country houses placed in an ornamental landscape.

Explore the old mansion quarter and its streets, with time to notice architectural details.

Apozari

Apozari occupies another side of Kastoria’s older townscape, combining traditional houses, religious buildings and views towards the lake. The changing gradient gives the district a different sequence of rooflines and glimpses of water from those in Doltso. Its architecture belongs to the same wider history of merchant prosperity, but the setting makes comparison worthwhile. Stonework, tiled roofs and the relationship between larger residences and smaller streets show how the town’s economic history was expressed across more than one neighbourhood.

See another historic neighbourhood rather than treating the town as one viewpoint.

Byzantine heritage

Kastoria’s Byzantine heritage is distributed through the town rather than concentrated in one large religious precinct. Panagia Koumbelidiki is a particularly distinctive example, with its compact mass, domed upper structure and carefully patterned masonry. Its scale contrasts with the larger merchant houses of the later quarters, making religious patronage visible within the everyday streetscape. Looking closely at brickwork, proportions and the building’s relationship with nearby houses gives this small church an architectural presence far beyond the size of its ground plan.
