In the town, take a little time on streets away from the ferry queues before heading to the beach. A meal and a slower walk can be as memorable as another organized excursion.

Isla Mujeres
An island excursion works best when you choose between a beach day, the southern headland and a boat activity before boarding the ferry.

The place and its story
Why it deserves time
Isla Mujeres lies offshore from Cancún, with its ferry arrival area and compact town toward the northern end. Playa Norte is the familiar sandy beach setting; Punta Sur offers a very different encounter with the island’s exposed rocky coast. The distance between them is a reason to plan, rather than to treat the whole island as one short walk. The island also has a marine tourism side, but a reef or underwater-art excursion is a separately organized activity, not something automatically included with a passenger ferry ticket.

Slow down and notice
Three things to look for
At Punta Sur, concentrate on the changing colour of the water and the rocky headland. Use marked paths and respect barriers at exposed edges.
For snorkeling, choose an operator who explains conditions, equipment and marine-protection rules. Do not touch coral or wildlife, and do not assume a photograph guarantees a particular animal sighting.
Make a thoughtful visit
Plan your visit
Treat this as a full-day outing from Cancún. Identify the exact departure terminal, buy for the intended crossing and check the last suitable return before leaving. Allow a margin for queues and weather changes. Decide how you will travel within the island; ferry tickets do not solve that part of the day. Follow beach flags and local advice even where the water looks inviting.
Time allowances are ATA planning suggestions, not opening hours. Confirm admission, availability and access directly before travelling.
