US and Canadian 800 Numbers

In the USA and Canada you often have to prefix the "800" with "1", so numbers are often written "1-800...". However, the "1" prefix is not universal. With the need for a prefix to get out from a private exchange in a motel or hotel, accessing 800 numbers from your room can require some experimentation.

A recent innovation is the introduction of area codes 877 and 888 for toll free numbers as well as the traditional 800. This is due there being no more 800 numbers available - an indication of the extremely high level of usage of toll-free numbers in the USA and Canada.
