A stronghold above the valley

Gutenstein’s stone castle was built between 1195 and 1220 under the Babenberg ruler Leopold VI. Its rocky position overlooked narrow gorges and routes between Lower Austria and Styria, giving its owners control over passing traffic.

A royal residence

After the Babenberg line ended in 1246, the castle passed to the Habsburgs. Frederick the Fair made it his residence, added a chapel and died here in 1330.

From the Hoyos family to preservation

Ludwig Gomez von Hoyos bought the estate in 1595 and restored the neglected castle. Construction of a new residence in the valley began in 1670. The older fortress gradually lost its importance and deteriorated.

Repairs continued in later centuries. Following a major collapse in 2003, preservation became particularly urgent. A phased conservation programme led by owner Ernst Hoyos began in 2013.
