Travel by water, listen to the forest and let the pace change.
The journey changes when the road gives way to a boat. Tortuguero is a landscape of waterways, forest and small communities, where a quiet canal excursion can become the centre of a day.
Plan the stay around the waterways and the practical connections between your lodge, the park and the village. A canal excursion deserves an unhurried morning, while a village visit gives the community a place in the journey. Turtle conservation adds another important story, with viewing dependent on season, permission and wildlife. Check what your accommodation package actually includes, and leave enough flexibility for weather and the boat journeys that connect each part of the stay.

The story behind the place.
Plan the transport before choosing a lodge. Properties are spread along different waterways, and reaching the village may need another boat. Turtle nesting is seasonal, guided and regulated, not an experience promised with every stay.

National park canals
Travel slowly enough for the forest to reveal itself from the water. A guide can connect the banks, vegetation and wildlife into a habitat story, with room for quiet observation. Boat and paddle outings are different experiences and may use different routes. Confirm the park sector, admission, dock and safety equipment together, including the return to your accommodation.

Tortuguero village
Spend a visiting period with the community’s shops, food businesses and conservation story. A modest walk and a meal can give the stay more depth than moving only between lodge and canal excursions. Access from your property and the return may depend on a boat, so agree the arrangements before departure. Keep residential entrances clear and ask before photographing people.

Sea-turtle conservation
Learn why the nesting beach and its conservation work matter before considering a viewing excursion. When the season and permissions allow, use correctly authorised local arrangements and follow the guide’s rules on distance, light and photography. A turtle photograph records one encounter and does not establish what will be seen on your visit. The conservation story remains valuable even without a sighting.
Plan your visitUse authorised local arrangements and follow lighting, photography and distance rules. Sightings depend on season and nature.
Make the first day about your transfer and settling into the lodge.
Take a canal outing, then rest before a village visit or short permitted walk.
Add a regulated turtle-viewing tour only if offered for your dates and suitable for your group.

Make the visit work for you
Plan a comfortable outing.
Allow time
2–3 nights. This is our suggested planning allowance, not a published opening time.
Eat & drink
Ask the lodge which meals are included and what is available in the village. Caribbean influences add a different chapter to Costa Rican cooking, check spice levels and ingredients for children or allergies.
Families, groups & accessible visits
Ask the venue about shade, toilets, steps and suitable routes before travel. For an organised group, confirm arrival slots, guide languages and coach access. We have not independently audited accessibility.
Season & conditions
Rain is possible year-round. Water levels, weather and nesting seasons affect outings, and the Caribbean does not follow exactly the same weather pattern as the Pacific.
