GERMANY · PRACTICAL PLANNING

Make time for Germany.

Useful choices and official sources for turning a country full of possibilities into a comfortable, rewarding journey.

Entry & your travel documents

Check the requirements for your nationality, passport and itinerary with Germany’s Federal Foreign Office. A country guide cannot establish your individual permission to enter. If you combine countries or cross into Poland at Görlitz, include that journey in your document checks.

Long-distance rail & reservations

Plan the exact stations, changes and final local journey with Deutsche Bahn. Compare the conditions of flexible and restricted fares, seat reservations, bicycles and group products. Leave a workable interchange rather than simply choosing the shortest advertised journey.

Deutschland-Ticket & local transport

The Deutschland-Ticket covers participating local and regional transport, generally not ICE, IC or EC long-distance trains. It is a subscription: read the current validity, purchase, personal-use and cancellation conditions before deciding whether it suits a short visit.

Museums, castles & guided visits

Reserve the attraction that anchors your day, then leave room for meals, security and the approach. Berlin’s Pergamonmuseum is closed as of October 2026; the museum has announced a partial reopening for 4 June 2027. Check the actual collections and opening programme for your dates.

Cars, coaches & city access

Environmental zones and city access restrictions vary. Check the official information for the cities and vehicle you will use, as well as hotel unloading, parking and coach stops. Navigation software does not establish permission to enter a restricted street.

Make the whole visit accessible

Ask about the actual route: station lifts, cobbled streets, palace steps, boat gangways and hilltop approaches are different questions. Confirm needs directly with operators and hotels, then adapt the length of the day and include a suitable alternative.

Choose a region, then a rhythm.

Give Berlin a stay of its own, then choose a northern, Saxon, Franconian or Rhine chapter. Distances between regions deserve proper travel days; Heidelberg, Cologne and a Middle Rhine base are not interchangeable places.

Neuschwanstein, a Bastei outing and a Middle Rhine boat journey each need attention to the final approach and return. Leave room for lunch, a slower walker and a discovery that was not on the original list.
