Begin by walking an edge of the Zócalo to understand the scale of the square. Look up at façades, but also watch for uneven pavement and active crossings.

The place and its story
Why it deserves time
Mexico City’s historic core is best understood as layers rather than a collection of disconnected monuments. The great central square faces the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, while the archaeological remains of the Templo Mayor reveal the Mexica ceremonial centre beneath the later city. Farther west, the pedestrian route along Francisco I. Madero leads toward the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the Alameda. This gives a first-time visitor a legible sequence: ancient capital, colonial institutions and a modern cultural landmark.

Slow down and notice
Three things to look for
Give the Templo Mayor its own time if you want the archaeological site and museum. Viewing it from surrounding streets is not the same as entering the visitor route.
At Bellas Artes, distinguish the building’s exterior from a museum visit or performance. Each offers a different experience and may require separate arrangements.
Make a thoughtful visit
Plan your visit
Plan a half-day for an introductory walk, longer if you enter a major museum. Choose one indoor anchor rather than promising a group every monument. Check official access notices for government buildings, museums and the square, which can be affected by events. Keep valuables close in crowds and use a clear meeting point. Many streets are walkable, but the historic centre is too extensive to cover casually in one visit.
Time allowances are ATA planning suggestions, not opening hours. Confirm admission, availability and access directly before travelling.
