Historic Puerto Vallarta

The place and its story

Why it deserves time

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the best-known landmark of the historic centre. Around it, a compact street network connects civic spaces, small businesses and the waterfront. The church is an active place of worship, and religious celebrations shape the area’s life; the December Guadalupe festivities are particularly important. Rather than regarding the centre as a short passage to a restaurant, take time to notice its architecture and the way the town rises away from the bay.

Slow down and notice

Three things to look for

01

Approach the church from the square and look up at the crown detail. Inside, keep voices low and give worshippers priority.

02

Turn into a side street to see balconies, doorways and changes of level. Do not enter private courtyards just because a gate is open.

03

Use a short climb only if it suits your mobility and the weather. You can appreciate the district without seeking a high viewpoint.

Make a thoughtful visit

Plan your visit

Allow about ninety minutes for a gentle circuit, longer with a meal or a church visit. Cobbles, slopes and narrow pavements call for steady footwear. Check whether ceremonies affect visitor entry and be especially considerate during religious events. Make a clear meeting point for a group, since the lanes and waterfront can be busy.

Time allowances are ATA planning suggestions, not opening hours. Confirm admission, availability and access directly before travelling.
