Look at the sculpture from the park and the beach side, keeping clear of pedestrian traffic.

Playa del Carmen waterfront and Parque Fundadores
Parque Fundadores and the Portal Maya sculpture give Playa del Carmen’s beachfront a recognizable starting point.

The place and its story
Why it deserves time
The waterfront near Parque Fundadores brings together beach views, public art and the movement of passengers toward the Cozumel ferry terminal. The Portal Maya is a contemporary landmark, not an ancient archaeological structure. Nearby streets connect with Quinta Avenida’s busy pedestrian shopping and dining area. This is a useful orientation walk because it shows how beach life, tourism and transport overlap in a small part of the city.

Slow down and notice
Three things to look for
Observe the ferry terminal as a working transport hub. If you plan an island visit, confirm the departure information directly rather than relying on an advertisement elsewhere.
Step a little away from the busiest frontage to compare the beach atmosphere with the commercial streets behind it.
Make a thoughtful visit
Plan your visit
Allow one to two hours for a first walk, longer with a meal or beach time. Carry water and protect yourself from the sun. Sand, seaweed and swimming conditions vary; follow the day’s flags and local guidance. Keep bags secure in busy areas. A performance may take place in the park, but it should not be presented as a fixed daily promise without checking the programme.
Time allowances are ATA planning suggestions, not opening hours. Confirm admission, availability and access directly before travelling.
