Río Secreto: the underground river

Below the forest south of Playa del Carmen, a guided route reveals freshwater passages and delicate limestone formations.

The place and its story

Why it deserves time

Río Secreto is an organized underground-river experience rather than an open beach-style swimming stop. The attraction is the limestone setting: stalactites, stalagmites and water reveal a landscape that is largely hidden from the roads and resorts above. A visit combines walking and time in water under a guide’s direction. Different tour options have different inclusions, so the name of the attraction alone does not establish your route, transfer or total time.

Slow down and notice

Three things to look for

01

Look at the shapes of the formations without touching them. Mineral surfaces are delicate, and keeping hands away helps preserve the cave.

02

Listen to the guide’s explanation of the water and rock before moving to the next chamber. The quieter moments can be as striking as the larger formations.

03

Follow the designated route and equipment instructions throughout. Do not enter another passage or separate from the group.

Make a thoughtful visit

Plan your visit

Reserve a suitable tour and allow a half-day including transfers. Ask the operator about uneven footing, time in water, enclosed spaces and suitability for everyone in your party. The cave route is not step-free. Confirm the equipment provided and the rules on cameras, skin products and valuables; personal cameras are not allowed inside the caves under the operator’s published rules. Bring a change of clothes and check the exact pickup or arrival instructions.

Time allowances are ATA planning suggestions, not opening hours. Confirm admission, availability and access directly before travelling.
