MOROCCO · SOUTHEASTERN MOROCCO · A SEPARATE DESERT CHAPTER

Erg Chebbi & Merzouga

Dune light, quiet horizons and a journey worth giving time.

The dunes near Merzouga offer a very different Morocco from the coastal cities and imperial medinas. The changing light is part of the attraction, but the distance and conditions matter just as much. Build the visit as a considered regional stay, with an operator and accommodation chosen for the actual experience you want.

Why it deserves time

Look beyond the photograph.

A short, well-planned dune walk or viewpoint can be more rewarding than a strenuous outing chosen only for a photograph. Ask how the landscape and nearby settlements are used today, and leave time for the light to change. Respect the environment and follow the operator’s local guidance.

Booking & timing

Make the outing work.

Confirm the exact camp or hotel location, road approach, final transfer, sleeping arrangements and return journey. Marrakech and Ouarzazate are not immediate desert bases; allow proper travel days. Compare what is included rather than assuming every “Sahara tour” offers the same route.

Access & practical needs.

Heat, wind, sand and remoteness affect comfort and logistics. Use a qualified operator, agree a suitable activity level and ask about facilities, communications and weather alternatives. Choose animal activities, if any, only with clear welfare information and a suitable alternative.

Where to base yourself.

Choose accommodation around Merzouga or the surrounding area for the exact transfer and facilities you need. A desert camp and a village hotel are different products. Confirm luggage handling, bathrooms, temperature arrangements and the route back before reserving.

Give the experience enough time.

Choose a few meaningful stops and confirm the opening programme, transport and access for your dates. The best route is one that leaves room to enjoy the place.
