Driving in the USA and Canada
US Interstate numbering: Two digit even numbers run east-west, with low numbers in the South. Two digit odd numbers run north-south, with low numbers in the West. Three digit numbers are used for city by-passes and for spurs into cities.
A business loop or business route is the opposite of a by-pass. A business loop passes through the centre of a town, whereas the main highway by-passes it. However, motels and fast food restaurants might well be on the main highway! A business route is often indicated on signposts purely by means of the abbreviation BR under the normal road number, which can be confusing for the uninitiated.
