America, one remarkable place at a time.

This directory includes 124 national monuments in U.S. states and Washington, D.C., plus 13 related destinations. It brings together National Park Service monuments and selected places managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Army and other partners.

It is a broad visitor selection rather than a complete legal inventory. Remote marine monuments and U.S. territorial monuments are outside this edition. Multistate places appear in each relevant state, but are counted only once overall.

Names and designations

White Sands and Black Canyon of the Gunnison are now national parks. Mount Rushmore is a national memorial. Alcatraz is part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. These and other related places are retained under their correct current designations and are not included in the national-monument count.

Planning and access

Some monuments have developed visitor areas; others are remote landscapes or newly designated places with limited access. The directory offers visit ideas, not live opening information. Check the linked official source for current facilities, access, reservations and permits. Research: October 2026.
