Old squares, contemporary art and a waterfront outlook on the Öresund, with a food scene shaped by many cultures. Choose this as a base when you want time to explore on foot as well as visit a headline attraction. The pacing below is a suggestion, not a fixed tour.
Begin in the old centre, where the smaller square and neighbouring streets give the city a human scale. Keep time for the town-hall frontage and the surrounding historic buildings.
The castle’s museums make a useful indoor anchor. Choose exhibitions to suit the party instead of trying to see every gallery, and check current museum opening days.
Contemporary art occupies a former power station. Check the current exhibitions and visitor arrangements; the programme changes, so a named show should never be assumed permanent.
Walk the seafront and look towards the Turning Torso from the surrounding public area. The tower is not a general-access observation deck. A bathhouse visit needs its own preparation and etiquette.
Try the city’s well-known falafel, then make time for a café rather than limiting meals to station snacks. Book a sit-down dinner if the party needs one table.
Malmö is a practical rail gateway from Copenhagen, but carry the travel documents required for the border crossing. Walk the centre, or use local buses and signed cycle routes with care around pedestrians.
Allow two nights. Combine the old centre, castle and one art visit on the first day; use the second for the waterfront or a separate Lund excursion. Leave space around an international train connection.
