Why give it time?

A Lake Geneva promenade, musical memories and rail excursions into a very different landscape above the shore. Choose this as a base when you want time to explore on foot as well as visit a headline attraction. The pacing below is a suggestion, not a fixed tour.

The lakeside promenade

Give the lakefront a proper walk rather than viewing it only from a train. Choose a shorter section in poor weather; the pleasure is in the changing light and mountain backdrop.

Freddie Mercury’s statue

The statue at Place du Marché recalls Mercury’s connection with Montreux. It is a public lakeside stop, easily combined with the promenade rather than a separate expedition.

Chillon Castle

The island castle lies along the shore outside the centre. Our separate page explains reservations, stairs and group arrangements; plan the visit rather than assuming a brief stop is enough.

Rochers-de-Naye

The rack railway climbs above the lake. Check the operating calendar and visibility before buying. The tourism board lists line modernisation closure from 1 April to 21 May 2027, so recheck plans for that period.

Something local for the table

Try lake-region cooking and, if you enjoy wine, ask about local Lavaux wines. Confirm tastings and transport before planning a vineyard excursion.

Getting around & arranging your visit

Montreux is a rail base for the lake region. Check castle-bound local transport, boat seasons and mountain train operations independently; an attractive route is not necessarily running every day.

Give the day room to unfold

Allow two or three nights. Pair the promenade and castle on one day, then keep another for a mountain journey or a separately arranged vineyard outing. Festival dates can make accommodation especially busy.
