This page offers recommendations for background reading before embarking on an American or Canadian holiday. The suggested books provide educational value for both tour operators and individuals. Please note that we are currently working on a reading recommendation for groups traveling from the USA to Europe or other countries, which will be posted soon.
One highly recommended book is "Centennial" by James Michener. Published in 1976 to coincide with the Bicentennial celebration, this novel takes place in the fictional town of Centennial, Colorado, located along the non-fictional South Platte River, northeast of Denver. The story spans across geological times and follows the lives of various groups, including dinosaurs, Arapaho Indians, mountain men, fur trappers, Oregon Trail pioneers, and many more. It delves into significant historical events such as Indian wars, the dustbowl era, and explores contemporary economic and environmental concerns.
While Michener occasionally shifts focus abruptly, leaving some characters behind, the book remains highly recommended. Readers may choose to skip the initial chapters on geology and dinosaurs and start with the chapter that explores the lives of the indigenous people before the arrival of Europeans. "Centennial" was also adapted into a television mini-series.
Reading "Centennial" provides a captivating journey through time, allowing readers to gain a deeper understanding of the region's history and the various forces that have shaped it.
There are a number of books retelling the story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. A public library is probably the best source.
