Recently, in my role as a scout for the American Tour Association, I had the
privilege of exploring a rather unique part of our great nation. I am excited to
share my incredible journey into the heart of Northwestern Colorado, where I
discovered an untamed wilderness, abundant wildlife, and a friendly, tight-knit
community - all in the charming town of Craig, Colorado.
Craig, often overlooked in favor of its mountainous cousins, is an oasis of
authenticity that blends the tranquility of the Colorado landscape with the
heartwarming hospitality of a small town. It's a testament to the spirit of the
West, a community that's been built by ranchers, miners, and outdoorsmen and
women.
One of the highlights of my trip was the Museum of Northwest Colorado
www.museumnwco.org. It's an impeccably
curated experience that takes you on a journey through the wild west, showcasing
a collection of cowboy and gunfighter memorabilia, historical photographs,
mining exhibits, and a fascinating exhibit about the local ranching history.
For those of you who are outdoor enthusiasts, prepare to be thrilled by the
recreational opportunities Craig offers. The Elkhead Reservoir State Park
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/ElkheadReservoir offers a plethora of
activities like fishing, boating, swimming, and hiking, while the Sand Wash
Basin (www.blm.gov/visit/sand-wash-basin) is home to one of the few remaining
herds of free-roaming wild horses in the United States. Watching these majestic
creatures in their natural habitat was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The Yampa Valley Golf Course
www.yampavalleygolf.com was another delightful surprise. Nestled along
the Yampa River, it's been named the "Best Course on the Western Slope." The
views of the Yampa Valley from the course are absolutely stunning, and the
course itself is beautifully maintained and challenging enough to delight
golfers of all skill levels.
Craig, Colorado, might not have been on your radar, but I assure you it's worth
the detour. It's a place that exudes a sense of belonging, where the rhythm of
nature meets the warmth of its people. I came away with fond memories and an
appreciation for this authentic corner of America, and I believe you will too.
Yours truly, M.K.W.
P.S.: Craig is a very convenient place to stop overnight half way between Durango, Colorado and Jackson, Wyoming.
