Driving in the USA and Canada

Petrol (Gas)

Navigating the landscape of fueling up your car in a foreign country can often be a confusing process. The terminology, payment methods, and even the units of measurement used can differ significantly from what you're used to back home. This is certainly true for those traveling to the USA and Canada, where 'gas' or 'gasoline' is the common term for what is often referred to as petrol in many other parts of the world.

In the USA and Canada, all standard rental cars use unleaded gasoline, which is readily available everywhere. Regular gasoline, denoted by 87 Octane, is the most affordable grade and is perfectly suitable for all normal rental vehicles. It's noteworthy that "Premium" gasoline in these countries refers to a higher octane, more expensive variant.

The design of the cars can also add to the unfamiliarity. In some models, the petrol filler cap could be tucked away behind the rear license plate or require a button in the glove box to release the petrol filler cap flap.

The petrol pump experience also differs from other countries like the UK. A variety of unleaded options often exist, and it's important to opt for the most affordable grade. In larger urban areas, payment before filling up is a common practice. After removing the hose, activating the pump is necessary, often by manipulating a lever or pressing a "Start" button on an electronic panel on the pump. Selection of a payment method, such as "Pay Inside," may be required before initiating the pump.

One point of convenience is that fuel prices marked on petrol pumps in the USA and Canada include sales tax, a stark contrast to the pricing structure in other domains like shops, restaurants, and motels. Occasionally, cash payment may even earn a small rebate.

Credit card payments are widely accepted at gas stations, and travelers cheques can be used provided that the amount of change is reasonable. It's important to be mindful of the different units of measurement used in each country: gasoline is sold by the US Gallon in America, while Canada uses the liter.

Understanding these nuances can make the process of refueling your vehicle a much smoother experience when navigating the roads of the USA and Canada.
