Kancamagus Highway and Franconia Notch
A Journey Through New Hampshire's White Mountains
As dawn breaks over New Hampshire, an adventure awaits—a journey along the
Kancamagus Highway and through Franconia Notch, a route that weaves its way
through the heart of the White Mountains, inviting exploration and discovery.
Beginning in the town of Lincoln, the Kancamagus Highway—locally known as the 'Kanc'—stretches
34.5 miles, a designated National Scenic Byway renowned for its spectacular fall
foliage. The highway's first major point of interest, the Lincoln Woods trail,
invites visitors to a serene walk through the vibrant New Hampshire woodland.
Continuing eastward, the road ascends, unveiling panoramic views of the vast
wilderness. The Kancamagus Pass, the highest point on the highway, offers a
breathtaking vista of the surrounding peaks. Farther along, Sabbaday Falls adds
the calming soundtrack of rushing water to the journey, a picturesque
multi-tiered waterfall easily accessible from the road.
Reaching its conclusion at Conway, the 'Kanc' offers not just a scenic drive but
a journey into the heart of New Hampshire's wilderness, a testament to the
state's natural beauty.
But the adventure doesn't end here. Just a short drive north lies Franconia
Notch, a spectacular mountain pass nestled in the White Mountains. The notch,
traversed by Interstate 93, is a state park filled with natural wonders.
The park's centerpiece, the Flume Gorge, is a natural chasm extending 800 feet
at the base of Mount Liberty. Boardwalks allow visitors to walk the length of
the gorge, flanked by towering granite walls and adorned by cascades and lush
vegetation. Nearby, the Old Man of the Mountain, although no longer present, is
commemorated for its significance in the state's history and identity.
Higher up, the Echo Lake Beach offers a tranquil spot for picnics and swimming,
with stunning views of the surrounding peaks. The park also provides access to
hiking trails leading to the Franconia Ridge, a spectacular alpine path
connecting several mountain summits.
From the kaleidoscopic foliage of the Kancamagus Highway to the soaring heights
of Franconia Notch, this journey paints a portrait of New Hampshire at its most
striking—a symphony of natural beauty, a call to exploration, and a lasting
memory of the grandeur of the White Mountains.
