Gjirokastër

Stone roofs, grand houses and a bazaar beneath the castle.

Gjirokastër’s distinctive stone architecture is best understood from inside as well as from a viewpoint. The old bazaar, fortified houses and large castle tell stories of family life, trade and changing political power. Streets climb sharply, so a successful visit depends on pace and a sensible transport plan. Stay long enough for the town to become more than one uphill excursion.

Look a little closer

What to see.

01

Gjirokastër Castle

The fortress dominates both the skyline and the town’s history. Its spaces and exhibits deserve interpretation beyond the valley view.

Plan your visitConfirm the current museum areas and allow for exposed surfaces and steps.

02

Old Bazaar

The junctions and stone streets show the commercial heart of the old town. Look for craft workshops and everyday activity as well as souvenir displays.

Plan your visitWear footwear with grip; polished stone can be slippery.

Skenduli House

A substantial historic house helps explain the domestic organisation behind the imposing façades. Guided interpretation makes rooms and fittings more meaningful.

Zekate House

This tower-house provides a different architectural perspective above the town. Consider its location and interior access before combining it with another house visit.

Suggested stay: 2 nights

A plan for this place

Arrange the castle for a suitable part of the day, then choose one house and the bazaar. Keep a long lunch break and avoid repeated climbs between the same levels. A local guide can connect architecture with social history rather than merely lead the shortest route.

Choose your fixed-time visits

Check the official programme for Gjirokastër Castle before fixing the rest of the day. Museum collections, guided visits and outdoor areas may follow different admission arrangements. Confirm the actual entrance, language and meeting time for anything booked.

Plan for your group

Ask the sites you choose about steps, toilets, seating and an accessible route. For a group, arrange the meeting point, vehicle drop-off and guide in advance; the best route for a quick individual visit is not always the best group route.

Make room for the place

Use the current opening days to choose the order. Give one substantial sight the morning, keep room for a sit-down lunch, and make the afternoon a choice rather than another deadline.

An unhurried introduction

A day to make your own.

  1. Begin with Gjirokastër Castle, using the current visitor arrangements.
  2. Leave time for lunch and a comfortable transfer rather than another immediate appointment.
  3. Choose Old Bazaar or Zekate House for a contrasting afternoon, according to weather and energy.

Adjust this editorial starting point to current access, weather and opening days.

Enjoy the place

Leave room between the sights.

The most rewarding introduction combines Gjirokastër Castle with time around Zekate House. Look at the streets and landscape between the stops, and leave room for an everyday café, market or neighbourhood walk instead of treating the place as a checklist.

Allow 2 nights if it fits your wider route; travel between regions needs time of its own.

A taste of the place

Eat & drink.

Make time for a local meal.

Look for qifqi, the town’s rice balls, and seasonal regional cooking. Ask about fillings, stock and dairy ingredients. A meal with time to talk is a good counterpoint to the steep lanes; agree seating and menu in advance for a group.

A useful base, direct contact

Where to stay in Gjirokastër.

CHOOSE YOUR BASE

The right address for your journey.

An old-town stay is atmospheric but may involve steep paving and stairs. Ask about luggage delivery, room access and evening walking distances.

Ask the property about total charges, room access, arrival with luggage, cancellation terms and any group requirements. Confirm the actual room and access route before booking.

Getting here & around

Plan the whole journey.

The town is a road journey from Tirana or the southern coast. Confirm the final uphill transfer from the bus or car drop-off. Do not assume a large vehicle can reach the door of an old-town property.

Local knowledge

Check the current programme.

The official local resource is the place to check current exhibitions, guided walks, seasonal openings and events. Ask about language, group admission and access for the particular visit you want, rather than assuming every programme runs daily.
