Why it matters

Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004, this cultural landscape preserves evidence of mountain life: paths, terraces, huts and pastoral land use. Looking for those traces adds another dimension to the scenery.

Walking is the way in

This is a walking destination, not a valley to drive through. Choose a route with the official valley information service, taking account of ascent, daylight, weather and the experience of the least confident person in the party.

Keep the landscape intact

Stay on established paths, carry out what you bring in and respect buildings and grazing areas. Take proper footwear, water and layers. For a longer mountain route, seek current local advice and arrange any required accommodation in advance.

Before setting out

Check current conditions, admission and access with the official visitor information service. Arrange your return journey before leaving your accommodation.
