A landscape shaped by a volcano

Deception Island’s caldera forms the harbour of Port Foster. Its volcanic setting gives the landscape a different character from the familiar image of a uniformly white Antarctica.

History needs space and care

Whalers Bay retains traces of the whaling era as well as later polar activity. Follow site-specific guidance, stay clear of restricted areas and leave historic materials undisturbed.

Access is an expedition decision

Volcanic, environmental and weather conditions affect visits. Follow the current operator and site guidance rather than treating an old account of a landing as a promise for your journey.

Give the day room to unfold

Treat this as a possible visit within an arranged expedition. Current site guidance, ice, weather and operational decisions determine access.
