Islands with their own character

The South Shetlands are often included in Peninsula-region voyages. Deception Island’s volcanic setting is one example of how different each stop can feel. The photograph here shows Deception Island within the group.

Look at the actual visit plan

Some journeys include a flight component and some are entirely ship-based. Check the arrival arrangement, accommodation and conditions for planned activities. A transport gateway should not be mistaken for a freely accessible tourist base.

Follow the landing team’s lead

Landing sites have different sensitivities. Take the briefings seriously, stay within the permitted area and give wildlife space without blocking its routes between land and sea.

Give the day room to unfold

Ask which islands are proposed on your departure and what alternatives the operator uses when conditions change.

Your base for the journey

Where to stay

For this coastal region, the usual visitor base is an expedition ship. These are operator contacts for cabins and itinerary planning, rather than hotels ashore. Confirm current availability, access, inclusions and requirements directly. Inclusion does not establish ATA membership.
