Antarctica · A closer look
Who will you meet in Antarctica?
Scientists, cooks, engineers, guides and crews: extraordinary surroundings still depend on everyday human skills.

A continent supported by many kinds of work
Research depends on more than scientists. Engineers, mechanics, communications specialists, cooks and logistics teams keep polar operations running. On a visitor expedition, ship crews and field staff add their own experience to the story.
Listen to the people who know the place
A briefing can explain why a landing changes or why a small patch of ground matters. Ask thoughtful questions and respect the work and privacy of people at research facilities. A station visit requires the appropriate arrangements.
A little humour, a lot of teamwork
Good communication and consideration matter in remote shared settings. A thoughtful guest makes the day easier for everyone. And however smartly dressed the penguins appear, they are not the reception staff.
Give the day room to unfold
Follow the expedition team’s directions and take the opportunity to learn from the different skills represented aboard or in camp.
