A base with a long story

Base A at Port Lockroy was established in 1944. The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust now manages the historic site, where the principal building contains a museum, post office and shop.

Conservation comes first

Opening, access and visitor arrangements depend on the season, conditions and conservation work. The Trust describes major repairs during the 2026/27 period; check the current arrangements with your expedition operator and UKAHT.

If the visit happens, take your time

Look at the everyday objects as well as the dramatic surroundings. A historic polar base tells its story through practical details. Respect staff instructions and wildlife around the site.

Give the day room to unfold

Treat this as a possible visit within an arranged expedition. Current site guidance, ice, weather and operational decisions determine access.
