Salzburg city, music & courtyards
Use the city guide for the fortress, Mozart, St Peter’s quarter and Hellbrunn. Plan one major visit at a time, with gardens, river walks and meals between interiors.
Salzburg · A useful starting point
Salzburg means both the city and a much larger federal state. Give the old town its own stay, then choose one countryside or mountain area instead of turning the whole state into a rushed day trip.

Different places, different kinds of day
Use the city guide for the fortress, Mozart, St Peter’s quarter and Hellbrunn. Plan one major visit at a time, with gardens, river walks and meals between interiors.
Hallein, Werfen, the Wolfgangsee, Zell am See and Krimml offer distinct excursions. The local sections below explain what to consider before adding them to a city stay.
An outline to adapt
Three nights in the city: arrival and a river walk, fortress or Mozart visit with old-town time, then Hellbrunn or one regional excursion. For Zell am See, Krimml or a longer mountain visit, choose a separate regional stay.
ATA editorial suggestion, not a fixed timetable or an official minimum stay.
Places with their own ATA guides
Beyond the city
Salt history, an old-town pause and a distinct underground visit offer a different day from Salzburg’s city museums. Choose the Celtic Museum or a reserved salt-mine tour as the main visit.
Plan Hallein station, then the onward connection to Dürrnberg if visiting the mine. Ask the operator about minimum age, clothing and the tour route before booking. Allow a full day rather than fitting it between city admissions.
Hohenwerfen Castle and Eisriesenwelt are separate attractions with very different physical demands. Choose one as the main visit and verify its operating calendar.
Check the train to Werfen and the onward approach. The ice cave requires walking and many steps, it is not an accessible substitute for a town visit. Use the cave operator’s current clothing and fitness advice.
A lakeside village and one scheduled boat leg can make an unhurried outing. The wider Wolfgangsee area crosses into Upper Austria, so check the actual landing and destination.
Plan the bus to St. Gilgen and the complete return journey before adding a boat or a mountain lift. Swimming belongs at designated facilities. Allow a day and choose a shore walk if the boat programme does not fit.
Lakefront time and a mountain day make different parts of a visit. A regional stay is more rewarding than rushing through on the way to another famous name.
Use Zell am See station, then plan the walk or transfer to your accommodation. Give a mountain outing a separate operating and weather check; choose one exact route for families. Two or three nights is an ATA planning suggestion.
The waterfalls offer an impressive natural outing, but viewing from lower areas and following the full waterfall trail are different levels of effort. Pick a turnaround point suited to your party.
Check the current public-transport route through the Pinzgau and the final bus stop, including any replacement service. Use the operator’s access and trail advice, surfaces can be wet and the full route climbs. A nearby regional stay avoids a rushed return to Salzburg city.
Before fixing the dates
Check the exact station or stop, the final walk or transfer and the last return. For evening events, arrange the journey home before booking the ticket.
Choose the named route and venue facilities that suit your party. A promenade, hilltop castle, cave and mountain trail have different demands. Ask about surfaces, steps, toilets and the full room-access route.
Check whether a place is in Salzburg city, Salzburg state or across a neighbouring border. Mountain caves, waterfalls, lake boats and historic interiors do not share a single season or ticket.
Use the local guides for food planning and selected hotel contacts. Ask the hotel directly about rooms and the complete price. Contact ATA when you would like help arranging group accommodation.
For tour operators & group organisers
Tell us where and when you are travelling and how many rooms you need. Ask about coach access, guided visits, meal times and mobility requirements when arranging the itinerary.
