Before you set out

Planning your Azerbaijan visit

A little planning leaves more time for the places you came to see. Choose a manageable route, confirm your transport and check current entry and local access requirements.

Arrive with the border rules checked

Do not assume you can enter overland from a neighbouring country. Land and sea entry are restricted; check the latest official rules, visa eligibility and requirements for your own passport before booking. Longer stays may require registration. Ask your accommodation who will handle it.

Choose one direction at a time

Baku is a useful starting point, but Sheki, Quba and Lankaran lead in different directions. Build a trip around the places that matter most to you and allow travel days between regions. Check rail and bus services for the actual date; a station may still require a road transfer.

Mountain roads and walking

Arrange a suitable driver for Khinalig and use current local advice on roads, weather and trail access. Keep a lower-altitude alternative for poor conditions. Tell a guide about your party’s walking ability and mobility needs before agreeing a route.

Heritage, homes and hospitality

Ask before photographing people, entering workshops or visiting religious interiors. A hosted meal or craft visit should be agreed in advance, including price and what is included. Leave room in the day for conversation rather than treating every encounter as a timed attraction.

A few practical habits

Carry a backup payment method and ask your host about local cash needs. Share the exact hotel address and pickup point with your driver. For a group, confirm luggage, vehicle capacity, rest stops and room allocations in writing. Consult current official regional advice and your insurer when choosing routes.
