Before you set out
Planning your Belize visit
A little planning leaves more time for the places you came to see. Choose a manageable route, confirm your transport and check current entry and local access requirements.

Choose two main bases first
A caye plus San Ignacio, or a mainland coastal base plus Cayo, makes a useful starting point. Add extra stops only when the transfers leave enough time to enjoy them. Ask where each excursion actually departs, especially when the accommodation is outside a village.
Allow for the arrival journey
Match the international airport, domestic airstrip or water-taxi terminal to your booking. Check luggage limits, arrival deadlines and ground transfers. Leave a buffer before international flights rather than relying on a same-day weather-sensitive boat connection.
Choose guides and activities carefully
Use licensed tourism businesses and confirm qualifications, group size and what is included. Explain swimming ability, mobility and any relevant needs before agreeing a reef or cave activity. Do not assume every excursion suits every age or ability.
Weather and protected places
Rain and sea conditions can change plans. Keep an alternative day available, follow official local alerts and respect closures. Stay on permitted archaeological and forest routes, and follow marine reserve rules.
Before booking
Check entry requirements for your passport and current official travel advice. Ask properties for complete prices, taxes, cancellation terms and transport costs. Public contact information is supplied for convenience and does not establish ATA membership or a reservation.
