Before you set out

Planning your Benin visit

A little planning leaves more time for the places you came to see. Choose a manageable route, confirm your transport and check current entry and local access requirements.

Plan by region

This guide concentrates on southern Benin. Current official advice includes restrictions affecting northern and eastern areas, including Pendjari and W national parks. Do not extend these route ideas into those regions without checking the latest advice from your government and insurer.

Allow time on the road

Choose a reputable driver or operator, confirm the actual pickup point and leave margin for traffic. Agree the full itinerary, fees, return arrangements and stops before setting out. A short distance on a map does not establish a quick transfer.

Lake and lagoon outings

Confirm suitable lifejackets, boat capacity and an experienced guide. Ask where to board and how conditions may alter the route. Follow conservation rules and avoid entering private houses, schools or fishing areas without permission.

Belief, memory and permission

Vodun is a living religion. Ask what visitors may attend, how to dress and whether photographs or recordings are welcome. Memorial sites connected with enslavement deserve thoughtful interpretation and space for reflection. A ceremony should never be assumed available on demand.

Before committing to bookings

Check visa and entry requirements for your own passport, current health guidance and travel advice. Ask hotels to confirm prices, payment methods and cancellation terms. Some published local contact sheets are older; obtain current details before relying on them.
