Before you set out
Planning your Bhutan visit
A little planning leaves more time for the places you came to see. Choose a manageable route, confirm your transport and check current entry and local access requirements.

Check the official visitor requirements
Confirm your visa or permit, Sustainable Development Fee and guide requirements through Bhutan’s official tourism and immigration channels. Rules and concessions depend on nationality, age and activity; do not assume a hotel room price includes them.
Let the roads determine the pace
Mountain distances are deceptive. Work with a licensed guide and driver on realistic daily journeys, with room for weather and stops. Confirm flights and leave a buffer before onward international connections.
Choose walks carefully
Explain mobility and walking ability before agreeing a route. High-valley walks and the Tiger’s Nest ascent are different activities. Ask about steps, altitude, weather and suitable alternatives.
Respect sacred places and homes
Follow dress, entry and photography rules. Agree farmhouse and craft visits with the hosts in advance and respect ceremonies that are not open to visitors.
Confirm the full booking
Ask for the itinerary, guide, transport, fees, accommodation, meals and cancellation terms in writing. Public hotel contacts do not establish ATA membership or a reservation.
