First time highlights

Beyond the beaten path

Smaller cities, distinctive traditions and places that reward an overnight stay. These are celebrated destinations in their own right; give them time beyond a hurried stop.

SEE HOW THE PLACES FIT TOGETHER

Find your way around.

Select a pin or place name to open its guide directly. Gold marks the first-time highlights, teal the places beyond the beaten path.

Orientation only: approximate city positions, with leader lines for nearby cities. Boundary data: Natural Earth, public domain ↗. Metropolitan France and Corsica shown for orientation. Not a road or transport map; this first selection does not cover every region.

Build your own journey

Places to combine in one trip.

Paris, then an Alsatian chapter

Give Paris its own stay, then continue to Strasbourg and Colmar with checked rail journeys and enough time for each town. A wine-route village needs its own local connection.

Burgundy, Lyon & an Alpine pause

Consider Dijon, Lyon and Annecy as a slower journey through different regions. Verify the actual trains and onward transfers rather than treating the map as a timetable.

A southern chapter to make your own

Combine a stay in Avignon with one carefully chosen regional outing, then give Nice a separate stay. Bordeaux and Rocamadour form a different southwestern idea, not a short detour on the same day.

These are route ideas, not packaged tours or confirmed transport schedules. Adjust the number of stops and nights to your pace; separate transfers need time of their own.

A FEW USEFUL ESSENTIALS

Before you travel.

Book a few meaningful visits

Reserve the museums or monuments that matter most, then leave time between them. Check the official entry, security, guide and group conditions.

Read the exact station name

Paris has several mainline stations, while other cities may have a separate high-speed station. Plan the local connection and final hotel approach.

Plan the local details

Museum closing days, market schedules, parking, city access and accommodation taxes vary. Ask the property or operator directly for the details that affect your booking.

Match the route to the season

City walks, a lake outing and a tidal bay need different preparations. Use current official entry, travel and local visitor sources before making arrangements.
