Walk around La Pila to see how its arches and brickwork change with the light. Avoid treating the fountain simply as a backdrop.

Chiapa de Corzo
A remarkable brick fountain, a river setting and living craft traditions make Chiapa de Corzo worth more than a quick stop before a boat ride.

The place and its story
Why it deserves time
The central square’s La Pila fountain is an immediate architectural landmark, with brickwork and forms associated with the town’s Mudéjar heritage. Santo Domingo and the surrounding streets add another layer, while local traditions include lacquerwork, embroidery, carving and marimba making. The Parachicos belong to a living festive and religious tradition, not an everyday show provided for visitors. A quieter visit outside festival time offers its own chance to appreciate the town.

Slow down and notice
Three things to look for
Ask craft sellers about materials, technique and the maker. For workshop visits, agree on access and photography first.
A marimba-related visit can deepen the experience, but check appointments and demonstrations directly rather than expecting a performance on demand.
Make a thoughtful visit
Plan your visit
Allow two or three hours for the centre, with additional time for a museum or workshop. Heat can be considerable, so include water and shaded breaks. Confirm access at churches and cultural venues separately. If combining the town with a canyon boat, settle the boat arrangements first and keep a realistic return margin.
Time allowances are ATA planning suggestions, not opening hours. Confirm admission, availability and access directly before travelling.
