Sumidero Canyon

The Grijalva River runs between immense canyon walls, with very different perspectives available from the water and the rim.

The place and its story

Why it deserves time

Sumidero Canyon is close enough to Tuxtla Gutiérrez to form a major regional outing, but a boat trip and a road journey to viewpoints are distinct experiences. From the river, the walls rise above you and details of rock, vegetation and seasonal water become visible. From above, the river’s course and the scale of the land are easier to grasp. Wildlife sightings depend on conditions; no responsible itinerary should promise particular animals.

Slow down and notice

Three things to look for

01

On a boat, look at how vegetation changes between exposed rock, shaded recesses and the river edge.

02

From a viewpoint, stay behind barriers and take time to understand the bends of the river rather than seeking an unsafe edge for a photograph.

03

Observe wildlife quietly and at a distance. Do not feed animals or ask an operator to approach them too closely.

Make a thoughtful visit

Plan your visit

Allow at least a half-day for a boat outing and more if adding viewpoints. Confirm the exact departure pier, inclusions and return transport; Chiapa de Corzo is a common base for river departures. Wear the provided life jacket, protect valuables from spray and carry sun protection and water. Weather and river conditions can alter operations. Swimming is not part of a canyon sightseeing trip.

Time allowances are ATA planning suggestions, not opening hours. Confirm admission, availability and access directly before travelling.
