LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER · Russia
PETERHOF · NEAR SAINT PETERSBURG
Terraces, cascades and garden paths turn the palace landscape into an outdoor experience of its own. Give the Lower Park time, then decide separately whether the palace interiors belong in your day.

KARELIA · LAKE ONEGA
The churches of Kizhi Pogost and the museum landscape around them offer an encounter with wooden architecture that is both monumental and finely detailed. The island setting is part of the experience, not simply the backdrop.

LAKE BAIKAL · NEAR IRKUTSK
Begin with the Baikal Museum and a carefully chosen lakeshore outing. Listvyanka offers an introduction to the lake’s natural history, but it represents only a small part of a vast and varied shoreline.

Build your own journey
Give Moscow and Saint Petersburg separate stays; a rail connection is a journey to arrange, not an invitation to compress both into a weekend.
Consider Moscow, Suzdal and Yaroslavl as a regional idea, adding proper travel time and checking the local connection into Suzdal.
Tobolsk, Tomsk and Irkutsk are separate destinations across large distances. Choose a realistic section instead of assuming they form a short loop.
Route ideas are geographic and cultural orientation, not confirmation that travel is advisable or that a connection is operating. Review current official advice first.
A FEW USEFUL ESSENTIALS
The U.S. State Department advises against travel to Russia, and the UK FCDO advises against all travel. Read the current advisory for your nationality before making plans.
U.S. travel advice →Visa eligibility, permitted entry points and documentation depend on nationality and circumstances. Check current consular guidance; do not assume an e-visa is available to every traveller.
Official e-visa portal →Russia uses the rouble, RUB. Foreign-issued cards and international transfers can be restricted. Confirm lawful payment arrangements, currency rules and insurance directly before making commitments.
Planning and practical sources →Choose fewer regions and allow real travel days. Time zones, winter conditions, seasonal boats and museum closing days can reshape a route.
