RUSSIA · PRACTICAL PLANNING

Before making plans.

Useful questions and primary sources to check before turning a cultural idea into an actual journey.

Travel advice & insurance

The U.S. State Department currently advises U.S. citizens not to travel to Russia. The UK FCDO advises against all travel. Read the full current advice for your nationality, including the limits of consular help and the possible effect on insurance. Conditions may change at short notice.

Entry & consular information

Check passport validity, visa type, permitted entry points and registration obligations with the appropriate consular source. The unified e-visa system is not available to every nationality or circumstance. Do not rely on a copied list of eligible countries.

Money & lawful payments

The currency is the Russian rouble, RUB. International card and banking restrictions can affect ordinary travel transactions. Confirm lawful payment methods directly with providers and your bank. Check relevant sanctions and cash import/export rules; this guide does not provide ways to bypass restrictions.

Rail, flights & time zones

Use the exact station and airport names for every leg. Confirm the date and local time printed by the operator, the available payment method and cancellation terms. Interregional journeys can take substantial time; domestic maps do not confirm an international flight or border connection.

Seasons & outdoor plans

Build around the conditions at the place you are visiting, not a single idea of Russian weather. Fountains, boats, island access and lake activities are seasonal. Keep an indoor alternative and use qualified operators for remote or water-based activities.

Museums, families & accessibility

Choose a few meaningful visits each day. Check the particular building, tour language, entry rules, security arrangements and step-free route. Ask whether pushchairs, wheelchairs or large bags are permitted in the spaces you want to enter.

Choose fewer regions.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg form one geographical idea. Suzdal and Yaroslavl fit a different regional chapter. Irkutsk/Baikal and Vladivostok require substantial additional journeys; they are not short day trips from the western capitals.

Use the map to orient yourself, then verify every connection. Suggested routes and stay lengths are editorial starting points, not operating schedules.
