Go below Sweden’s copper story

At Falun Mine, the vast surface pit and underground passages explain an industry that helped shape Sweden.

Look before you descend

Begin with the Great Pit and surface interpretation so the underground spaces have context. The scale above ground tells a different part of the story from the guided descent.

An underground visit

The mine’s guided route descends 67 metres and takes about an hour. Book an appropriate language. This is a managed visitor route, not an invitation to explore other mine workings.

Know the physical demands

The operator requires visitors to be at least three years old and able to manage stairs. Helmets and capes are provided and must be worn. It is cool, wet and dirty underground; bring a warm layer and sturdy shoes.

A worthwhile surface alternative

Ask which museum and historic buildings are open on your date. The surface landscape still makes a useful visit for someone who cannot take the underground tour. Do not describe the mine as step-free.

Give the day room to unfold

Allow half a day including the surface site, tour and a pause. Confirm the current ticket package and museum calendar on the operator’s site; they vary by season.
