Why give it time?

Copper-mining heritage, painted timber neighbourhoods and the art of Dalarna give this inland town a story beyond its famous red paint. Choose this as a base when you want time to explore on foot as well as visit a headline attraction. The pacing below is a suggestion, not a fixed tour.

Falun Mine

Make the mine the anchor, with an underground tour only if its stairs and conditions suit the party. Our separate mine page explains the practical limits.

Dalarna Museum

This is a useful introduction to the region and the people behind its traditions. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then leave time to absorb a few subjects rather than skim the building.

Historic timber neighbourhoods

Walk the town’s older streets and look for the relationship between homes and the mining landscape. These are lived-in areas; keep noise down and do not enter gardens for photographs.

Carl and Karin Larsson’s Sundborn

The artists’ home is outside Falun, so allow a separate excursion. Check the house’s guided-visit arrangements and transport before setting out; a bus connection is not a guaranteed seat on a house tour.

Something local for the table

Choose a local lunch and save time for fika. Dalarna is a good place to notice the everyday café as well as the heritage attraction; ask what is made locally.

Getting around & arranging your visit

Falun has rail connections and regional buses. Keep Sundborn separate from a town-centre walk, and reserve underground visits before arranging a group transfer.

Give the day room to unfold

Allow two nights. Visit the mine and its surface landscape on one day, then pair the museum and town streets or make the Sundborn excursion the next morning.
