Aescher & Wildkirchli, beneath the cliff

A mountain inn tucked under rock and the neighbouring cave setting make a striking Alpstein outing, when conditions allow.

A photograph with a real approach

The inn’s famous cliffside setting is reached on foot. It is not a roadside café, and the cable car does not remove the need for a mountain path.

Start at Wasserauen

Check the Ebenalp cable car’s timetable and maintenance periods before travelling. The published 2026 calendar includes a closure from 2 November to 24 December; future dates need a fresh check.

The Wildkirchli route

Caves, steps and exposed stretches demand suitable shoes, sure-footedness and dry, safe conditions. If you are unsure about the party’s ability, ask the operator or a qualified local guide and choose another outing.

Food and the return journey

Check the inn’s seasonal opening and reserve where necessary. Leave a margin before the last descent. Snow, ice, wind or poor visibility are reasons to change the plan, not to hurry along the path.

Give the day room to unfold

Allow a generous half-day only in appropriate conditions. Check the cable car, path and inn separately. Keep Appenzell’s village and museum as the comfortable alternative.
