Antalya offers far more than a resort beach. Kaleiçi’s narrow streets lead towards the old harbour, parks open onto the Mediterranean, and the surrounding region holds remarkable ancient cities. Stay in town for a walkable historic introduction, then choose one excursion into the countryside.
Antalya joins a working Mediterranean city to a remarkable archaeological hinterland. Kaleiçi occupies the old harbour settlement, while the surrounding province holds mountain cities, Roman avenues and watercourses that emerge from the Taurus landscape. These places reveal different forms of settlement: a sheltered port, an inland regional centre and a fortified community high above the coastal plain.
Hadrian’s Gate, historic houses and small lanes reward a slow walk. The harbour gives the city its Mediterranean setting without requiring a long day on the road.
Kaleiçi’s streets descend towards the sheltered old harbour through a dense fabric of houses, walls and historic gateways. Ottoman domestic buildings share the district with evidence of earlier Roman and Byzantine settlement. From the waterfront, the enclosing cliffs and harbour basin make clear why this small inlet became such an enduring focus of the city.
Plan your visit Wear shoes suited to cobbles and steps, and check access to individual historic buildings.
Ruins set among rugged slopes offer an adventurous contrast to the seafront. This is a landscape to experience as well as an archaeological site.
Termessos occupies a dramatic mountain site within the Güllük Dağı landscape. Its surviving theatre places rows of stone seats against a rugged natural backdrop, while the wider ruins include civic buildings, cisterns and extensive burial grounds. Unlike a coastal port, this was a settlement whose topography formed an essential part of its identity and defences.
Plan your visit Treat it as a separate outing. Expect uneven paths and a climb, carry water and check current site access.
The Düden name covers more than one waterfall setting. The lower falls meet the sea, while the upper site offers another kind of park visit. Decide which experience you want before arranging transport.
The name Düden refers to more than one waterfall setting. Upper Düden has a shaded, inland landscape around falling water and rock formations; Lower Düden is the separate cascade that drops from coastal cliffs towards the sea. The photograph here shows Upper Düden, making the distinction clear rather than presenting the two places as one viewpoint.
Plan your visit Do not assume both locations are beside the Old Town. Check the exact destination and current conditions.
Colonnaded streets and substantial Roman remains make Perge a rewarding excursion for visitors interested in life beyond palaces and temples.
Perge’s broad streets and substantial public buildings reveal the scale of a Roman provincial city. Colonnades, baths, an agora and a stadium survive within a planned urban landscape. The visible remains are complemented by finds preserved elsewhere: many sculptures excavated at Perge are held in Antalya’s museum collections, rather than standing in their original positions on the site.
Plan your visit Plan shade breaks and sun protection. Choose one major ancient site for an unhurried day.
Morning: walk Kaleiçi from Hadrian’s Gate towards the harbour.
Afternoon: pause in Karaalioğlu Park or plan a waterfall visit.
Another day: choose Termessos or Perge, leaving time to explore without rushing.

Enjoy the place, not just the sights
Pause. Taste. Stay a little.
Look for regional dishes such as Antalya-style piyaz, then settle into an Old Town courtyard for a meal. Ask about the terrain and access before booking a restaurant for a larger group.
How long to stay
Allow three nights for a city stay and a separate archaeological outing. Kaleiçi offers character and walkability, with steps and limited vehicle access to consider.
