Meet the people behind the island welcome

Markets, food, music and two island identities add depth to a beach holiday.

Two islands, individual stories

Make space for both Antiguan and Barbudan perspectives. A host, market trader or guide can tell you about their own community; no one person needs to represent an entire country.

Make a meal part of the visit

Ask about local dishes and what is being cooked that day. Markets and community food events provide another way to meet the islands, beyond a hotel menu. Lunch is allowed to be the main event.

An easy courtesy

Start with a greeting, ask before taking someone’s photograph and dress appropriately away from the beach. Check the current calendar for music, sailing and cultural events, and ask how visitors can join respectfully.

Give the day room to unfold

Ask a local host for a cultural outing or meal that suits your dates and interests.
