Carinthia · A useful starting point

Find your kind of Carinthia.

Choose a lake district, a cultural town or an alpine valley. A single base can support several unhurried days, but the Grossglockner area and the southern lakes need different transport and seasonal plans.

Different places, different kinds of day

Choose the experience first.

City culture & Wörthersee

Klagenfurt offers an urban starting point; Velden puts the resort and lakeside experience first. Give the city and a lake outing their own time.

Villach & Lake Ossiach

Villach suits rail-based arrival and town life. Ossiach adds an abbey setting and concert possibilities, with a separate connection to the correct lakeshore.

Lake Millstatt & the artists’ town

Millstatt is a village-and-lake base. Gmünd provides a contrasting day of small exhibitions and medieval streets, with transfers planned separately.

An alpine village stay

Heiligenblut is the choice for village atmosphere and a separately arranged high-alpine excursion. Do not treat it as a brief extension of a Wörthersee afternoon.

An outline to adapt

Give the journey breathing room.

A suggested stay

Three nights by one lake: arrival and a shore stroll, a town or abbey day, then one boat or outdoor outing if conditions suit. Add separate nights for Heiligenblut rather than crossing the state repeatedly.

Places with their own ATA guides

Find the useful local details.

Before fixing the dates

Make the small decisions early.

Families & access needs

Choose the named route and venue facilities that suit your party. A promenade, hilltop castle, cave and mountain trail have different demands. Ask about surfaces, steps, toilets and the full room-access route.

Seasons & reservations

A lake named railway station may be outside the village you want. Check the final bus, shore, landing or hotel transfer. Use designated bathing facilities; a lakeside path is not unrestricted public swimming access.

Meals & direct hotel contacts

Use the local guides for food planning and selected hotel contacts. Ask the hotel directly about rooms and the complete price. Contact ATA when you would like help arranging group accommodation.

For tour operators & group organisers
