Wachau, art & wine villages
Choose Krems or Melk as a base, then add Dürnstein or Weißenkirchen on another day. Boats, buses and the seasonal railway each need their own timetable check.
Lower Austria · A useful starting point
The Wachau, the Piesting Valley and the Semmering-Rax area offer very different days. Choose one area at a time, then use the town guides for sights, practical details, meals and direct accommodation contacts.

Different places, different kinds of day
Choose Krems or Melk as a base, then add Dürnstein or Weißenkirchen on another day. Boats, buses and the seasonal railway each need their own timetable check.
Use Pernitz and Gutenstein for an illustrated map, local history, the Myrafälle and selected places to eat and stay. Add Dreistetten as another planned outing.
Payerbach and Gloggnitz suit a valley-and-culture visit, with a separately planned railway walk or Rax excursion. Choose the route before deciding whether it suits your family.
Wiener Neustadt and Baden offer museums, parks and town visits. Baden adds thermal bathing; Wiener Neustadt adds historic defences. Pick the activities that fit your interests.
Hainburg is the starting point for its own town visit, with Carnuntum or the Donau-Auen as separate days. It is a different region from the Wachau.
Rohr im Gebirge suits local themed walks and meals arranged around rural opening days. It is a place to slow down rather than a shortcut between distant attractions.

Use ÖBB for rail and VOR for regional connections. Check the exact stop, the walk to the attraction and the last return. A seasonal sightseeing train is not a substitute for checking the whole journey.
Choose the exact route, not simply a destination marked family-friendly. A river promenade, hilltop ruin and mountain trail have different demands. Ask venues and hosts about entrances, surfaces, room access and facilities.
Check attraction dates, restaurant kitchen days and hotel availability separately. Rural inns, caves, river services and huts may have limited operation. Reserve important group visits before committing to the rest of the itinerary.
Lower Austria’s official visitor service publishes regional information and can help with specific planning questions.
