Upper Austria · A useful starting point

Find your kind of Upper Austria.

The Danube cities and the Salzkammergut offer different kinds of trip. Start with a city for museums and town life, or a lake-area base for slower scenery and separately planned mountain outings.

Different places, different kinds of day

Choose the experience first.

Linz & Wels, city days

Linz offers contemporary art, the Danube and the Pöstlingberg railway. Wels gives another historic-town and cultural day, with its own transport and event calendar.

Steyr, rivers & historic streets

Choose Steyr for the old town, river setting and a less hurried overnight stop. Allow time to enjoy the centre after the day visitors leave.

Traunsee & the spa town

Gmunden provides lakefront time and separate mountain options. Bad Ischl offers villa, park and café culture, with onward journeys planned rather than improvised.

Hallstatt at a respectful pace

A full day or overnight stay leaves room for the village and one selected attraction. Plan the ferry or road approach first and keep private residential spaces clear.

An outline to adapt

Give the journey breathing room.

A suggested stay

Three nights in Linz: arrival by the river, a museum-and-old-town day, then a separate hill or Wels visit. For the lakes, choose Gmunden or Bad Ischl as another base and set aside a properly planned Hallstatt day.

Places with their own ATA guides

Find the useful local details.

Before fixing the dates

Make the small decisions early.

Families & access needs

Choose the named route and venue facilities that suit your party. A promenade, hilltop castle, cave and mountain trail have different demands. Ask about surfaces, steps, toilets and the full room-access route.

Seasons & reservations

The Salzkammergut crosses state borders. Hallstatt’s station is across the lake, and Gmunden’s main station is above the waterfront. The final connection matters as much as the main train.

Meals & direct hotel contacts

Use the local guides for food planning and selected hotel contacts. Ask the hotel directly about rooms and the complete price. Contact ATA when you would like help arranging group accommodation.

For tour operators & group organisers
