Nassau

Museums, colourful streets and local food in the country’s capital on New Providence.

Nassau is the Bahamas at city scale: a harbour, historic streets, everyday commerce and places where the islands’ story reaches beyond the beach. Rather than rushing from a cruise arrival to a string of shopping stops, give the capital a day with a clear theme. The Queen’s Staircase offers a striking change of atmosphere, while a museum or gallery can help explain the people and history behind the colourful townscape. Leave room for a meal and time simply to look around.

Use New Providence as your geographical starting point. Paradise Island lies across a bridge, but a photograph of another island’s sandbar does not make it a Nassau excursion. Match your hotel, meeting point and chosen outing before committing to a plan. A focused city walk and one cultural visit make a more satisfying day than racing between distant attractions; allow for the return journey as well as the time you want to spend at each stop.

A city day with a purpose

Choose a museum or gallery, a walk through the historic centre and a meal that introduces Bahamian flavours. Leave time for the Queen’s Staircase rather than fitting every stop between shopping trips.

The limestone passage is worth noticing as a place in its own right. A guide can add historical context; arrange a route that suits the steps and walking ability of your party.

Know which island you are on

Nassau is on New Providence. Paradise Island is connected by bridge, but an Exuma or Eleuthera hotel is a different island journey. Confirm the location and transfer before booking.

Before booking an island experience, ask for the actual departure point and destination. A Nassau address and a Bahamas address do not necessarily mean the same journey.

Give the day room to unfold

Choose one main outing for each day and leave time for meals and the journey back. Confirm access, transport and any guided arrangements before setting out.
