BELGIUM · PRACTICAL PLANNING

Make time for Belgium.

Build a Belgian journey around a few good bases, thoughtful museum visits and the time between the famous squares.

Entry and travel documents

Check the current passport and visa requirements for your nationality through the Belgian authorities. Include every country on a wider European itinerary, and confirm the applicable rules before paying for fixed arrangements.

Rail and the final local journey

Use SNCB/NMBS for the actual train route and the relevant local operator for the last part of the journey. A station with the city’s name may still require a tram or bus to your hotel. Leave time for luggage and platform changes.

Coaches and driving

Check low-emission registration, traffic circulation, parking and coach arrangements with each city. Historic centres often restrict large vehicles. Confirm a legal drop-off and the walking route from there before promising door-to-door access.

Museums and reservations

Choose a few substantial collections and check opening days, timed admission and current restoration. The Ghent Altarpiece, a tower climb and a guided battlefield visit need different kinds of planning. Book the exact experience rather than assuming a general pass includes it.

Access, paving and historic buildings

Ask about the actual entrance, toilets, seating, lift and room route. Cobblestones, steep citadel paths and towers can be demanding. Keep an enjoyable level alternative and arrange group needs directly with the site.

Food and a comfortable daily rhythm

Reserve meals for a group and discuss ingredients directly. Give an art visit, remembrance visit or hill walk enough time before lunch. A café and a quiet evening are useful parts of the journey, not gaps that need filling.

Choose a region, then a rhythm.

Belgium’s compact geography can encourage an overfilled itinerary. Choose Brussels and one or two other bases, then add a region because you want to spend time there. Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia offer different stories; a few good visits with time for meals and local life will show more than a rapid circuit of squares.
