Paphos

Mosaics, harbour light and a city with two different rhythms.

Paphos is worth exploring as both a seaside town and an archaeological landscape. Kato Pafos brings the harbour and ancient remains together; the upper town offers a different pace of streets, cafés and local collections. Give the mosaics a proper visit, then let the coastal setting shape a slower afternoon.

Look a little closer

What to see.

01

Kato Pafos Archaeological Park

The surviving floors of Roman houses reveal mythological stories through mosaic scenes. Read the interpretation and follow the covered viewing routes; the site is much more than a single famous panel.

Plan your visitChoose the cooler part of the day and allow for exposed walking.

02

Tombs of the Kings

Rock-cut tombs and columned courts outside the harbour area give another perspective on ancient Pafos. Notice how the architecture changes as you move between the burial complexes.

Plan your visitUneven rock and steps make footwear and the chosen route important.

Harbour & Pafos Castle

Walk the quay with the small fort at its western end, then look back along the boats and waterfront. The castle and the wider harbour make a useful contrast with the archaeological park.

Plan your visitCheck castle admission separately; the public promenade is a different visit.

Upper town & district archaeology

Leave the waterfront for the streets of Pano Pafos and consider the district archaeological museum. This adds local context to objects and settlements seen elsewhere on the island.

Plan your visit.

Suggested stay: 3 nights

A plan for this place

Use one morning for the archaeological park and a separate visit for the Tombs of the Kings. Add upper-town time instead of filling every afternoon with another transfer. Paphos is also a useful western base, but Polis and the Akamas need a real outing, not a quick detour.

Choose your fixed-time visits

Check the official programme for Kato Pafos Archaeological Park before fixing the rest of the day. Museum collections, guided visits and outdoor areas may follow different admission arrangements. Confirm the actual entrance, language and meeting time for anything booked.

Plan for your group

Ask the sites you choose about steps, toilets, seating and an accessible route. For a group, arrange the meeting point, vehicle drop-off and guide in advance; the best route for a quick individual visit is not always the best group route.

Make room for the place

Use the current opening days to choose the order. Give one substantial sight the morning, keep room for a sit-down lunch, and make the afternoon a choice rather than another deadline.

An unhurried introduction

A day to make your own.

  1. Begin with Kato Pafos Archaeological Park, using the current visitor arrangements.
  2. Leave time for lunch and a comfortable transfer rather than another immediate appointment.
  3. Choose Tombs of the Kings or Upper town & district archaeology for a contrasting afternoon, according to weather and energy.

Adjust this editorial starting point to current access, weather and opening days.

Enjoy the place

Leave room between the sights.

The most rewarding introduction combines Kato Pafos Archaeological Park with time around Upper town & district archaeology. Look at the streets and landscape between the stops, and leave room for an everyday café, market or neighbourhood walk instead of treating the place as a checklist.

Allow 3 nights if it fits your wider route; travel between regions needs time of its own.

A taste of the place

Eat & drink.

Make time for a local meal.

Try a Cypriot meze when you have time for its sequence of small dishes. Around the harbour, compare the actual fish selection and how it is priced; in the upper town, leave room for a bakery stop or a simple lunch away from the waterfront.

A useful base, direct contact

Where to stay in Paphos.

CHOOSE YOUR BASE

The right address for your journey.

Choose Kato Pafos for harbour and coastal walks, or upper-town accommodation for a town-centre atmosphere. Compare the actual walking route to the sights; a Paphos address can cover a wide area.

Ask the property about total charges, room access, arrival with luggage, cancellation terms and any group requirements. Confirm the actual room and access route before booking.

Getting here & around

Plan the whole journey.

Paphos airport and Kato Pafos are separate parts of the arrival journey. Check local bus stops, airport services or a prearranged transfer for the specific hotel. The harbour, upper town and Tombs of the Kings are spread out enough to plan the final connection.

Local knowledge

Check the current programme.

The official local resource is the place to check current exhibitions, guided walks, seasonal openings and events. Ask about language, group admission and access for the particular visit you want, rather than assuming every programme runs daily.
