First time highlights

Beyond the beaten path

Smaller cities, distinctive traditions and places that reward an overnight stay. These are celebrated destinations in their own right; give them time beyond a hurried stop.

SEE HOW THE PLACES FIT TOGETHER

Find your way around.

Select a pin or place name to open its guide directly. Gold marks the first-time highlights, teal the places beyond the beaten path.

Orientation only: approximate city positions, with leader lines for nearby cities. Boundary data: Natural Earth, public domain ↗. Not a road or transport map. This first selection does not cover every region of Italy.

Build your own journey

Places to combine in one trip.

The art-city rail journey

Give Rome, Florence and Venice their own stays, with reserved journeys and realistic arrival days between them. Add Bologna only if you can give it time of its own.

A slower central-Italy chapter

Combine Rome and Orvieto, then choose a Tuscan stay for the Val d’Orcia or continue towards Florence. Rural transport and hill-town access need separate arrangements.

Porticoes, mosaics & a courtly hill town

Consider Bologna, Ravenna and Urbino as a regional idea. Check each onward connection; Urbino needs a bus or road transfer rather than a direct high-speed train.

These are route ideas, not packaged tours or confirmed transport schedules. Adjust the number of stops and nights to your pace; separate transfers need time of their own.

A FEW USEFUL ESSENTIALS

Before you travel.

Reserve the visits that matter

Book major museums and archaeological visits through their official channels. Check timed entry, named tickets and exactly which buildings or routes are included.

Railways & the last kilometre

High-speed trains connect major cities, but a hill town, rural hotel or final water transfer needs its own plan. Read the exact station name on every ticket.

Local access & visitor charges

Check Venice’s Access Fee system, local accommodation taxes and restricted driving zones for your dates. Hotel access instructions are part of arrival planning.
