Ravenna

Mosaics that turn small spaces into whole worlds

Ravenna asks you to slow down and look up. Early Christian monuments reveal startling colour and detail inside modest-looking buildings, while a walk between them brings the city back to a human scale. Make room for modern mosaic work as well as its ancient inheritance.

Look a little closer

What to see.

01

Basilica of San Vitale

Architecture and mosaic work act together here: look at the space as a whole before concentrating on the celebrated figures and patterns in the apse. A little historical context makes the details more meaningful.

02

Mausoleum of Galla Placidia

A small, intimate interior holds a remarkable mosaic sky. It makes a powerful contrast with San Vitale next door and shows why the time spent inside matters more than the building’s size.

Sant’Apollinare Nuovo & the baptisteries

Processions of figures and richly decorated domes reveal different approaches to faith and imagery. Choose another monument to compare carefully rather than racing through every site.

MAR & the living mosaic tradition

Modern and contemporary mosaic work shows that Ravenna’s connection with the medium did not end in antiquity. Pair a museum visit with time to notice workshops and public art around town.

Make the visit work for you

Plan your visit.

Suggested stay: 1–2 nights

A plan for this city

Start with San Vitale and Galla Placidia, then take a break before selecting another mosaic monument. Keep an afternoon for MAR or a workshop. A combined ticket is useful only if the opening times, reservations and walking route work for your particular dates.

Choose your fixed-time visits

Use the official attraction links above to check entry, guided languages, security and ticket coverage. Reserve the visit that matters most, then leave a comfortable gap for the next appointment.

Plan for your group

Ask each attraction about step-free routes, toilets, waiting areas and tour duration. Historic buildings and outdoor routes do not all offer the same access.

A realistic day

Choose two substantial visits rather than all four. Put an outdoor walk between interiors, leave time for lunch, and keep a weather alternative. Current opening days should decide the order.

An unhurried introduction

A day to make your own.

  1. Begin with Basilica of San Vitale, using confirmed entry arrangements.
  2. Leave time for a local meal and a comfortable transfer.
  3. Choose Mausoleum of Galla Placidia or a shorter outdoor walk, according to the season and your pace.

Editorial starting point only. Adjust to current access, transport and opening days.

Enjoy the place

Leave room between the sights.

Start with San Vitale and Galla Placidia, then take a break before selecting another mosaic monument. Keep an afternoon for MAR or a workshop. A combined ticket is useful only if the opening times, reservations and walking route work for your particular dates.

Give this destination 1–2 nights if it fits your wider route. More distant regions need separate travel days.

A taste of the place

Eat & drink.

Make time for a local meal.

Romagna’s piadina makes an easy informal lunch, with fillings to suit the season. For a seated meal, compare local fresh pasta and regional vegetables. Keep a break between mosaic interiors so that you return ready to notice their fine detail.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Choose for your own needs.

This is a location-based contact, not a personal inspection or a quality rating. Confirm current operation, total charges, room access, cancellation terms and any group arrangements directly.

Ask about local taxes, the final vehicle or walking approach, and how luggage reaches your room. A historic-centre address does not guarantee step-free access.

Getting here & around

Plan the whole journey.

Check rail connections through the appropriate regional hub and allow time if changing at Bologna, Faenza or another station. Ravenna’s central monuments can be combined on foot, but Sant’Apollinare in Classe is outside the central walking circuit and needs a separate transport plan.
