Cappadocia
Fairy chimneys, cave rooms and hidden valleys
Cappadocia is a region, not a single city. Göreme makes a convenient first base for its rock-cut churches, sculpted valleys and nearby villages. Enjoy the celebrated sunrise views, then spend the day finding the quieter stories hidden inside the landscape.
Cappadocia’s volcanic landscape became architecture as well as scenery. Erosion created cones and valleys, while people cut churches, domestic rooms and refuges into the soft rock. Göreme’s paintings, the workshops of Avanos and the underground settlements reveal different responses to the same material, extending the story beyond the region’s familiar panoramas and balloon photographs.
Rock-cut churches connect the dramatic landscape with centuries of religious life. Look closely at the surviving painted interiors rather than rushing through for exterior photographs.
The open-air museum brings together rock-cut monastic buildings and churches within a compact valley setting. Their painted interiors are central to the UNESCO-listed Göreme landscape, preserving important evidence of Byzantine religious art. From outside, entrances and windows cut into the rock show how natural formations were adapted into interconnected spaces for worship and communal life.
Plan your visit Check current tickets and whether special church entries are separate. Follow photography restrictions inside.
The riverside town offers a living craft tradition alongside its shops and cafés. A workshop demonstration gives families something to participate in, beyond another viewpoint.
Avanos stands beside the Kızılırmak, whose red clay supports the town’s pottery tradition. The potter’s wheel turns this local material into vessels through a process that is still visible in working studios. That connection between river, raw material and hand production gives the workshops a different kind of cultural depth from Cappadocia’s rock-cut monuments.
Plan your visit Ask what a session includes, which language is available and whether firing or delivery costs extra.
Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu reveal how people adapted the soft rock below ground. Choose one well-planned visit, with context from an official guide or museum information.
Underground settlements such as Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu contain rooms linked by narrow passages, with storage spaces, ventilation and other provisions for extended shelter. They were functioning refuges rather than simply tunnels. Kaymaklı provides one example of the substantial spaces concealed beneath the surface settlements of the region.
Plan your visit Expect steps, narrow passages and low ceilings. Ask about suitability if enclosed spaces are a concern.
Rock-cut churches, village life and a different valley setting make an appealing excursion beyond the best-known Göreme circuit. Plan time to stop rather than simply drive through.
Soğanlı combines a village landscape with rock-cut churches and the traces of older settlement. Churches such as Karabaş, Kubbeli and Tahtalı preserve different forms of carved architecture and painted decoration. The valley’s importance lies in this relationship between living settlement, cultivated ground and religious spaces, extending the story of Cappadocia beyond the better-known Göreme cluster.
Plan your visit Arrange transport for a separate outing. Balloon flights elsewhere in the region depend on weather and operating approval, never assume a guaranteed launch.
Morning: visit Göreme Open-Air Museum with time for the rock-cut church interiors.
Afternoon: explore Avanos or choose a valley walk suited to your fitness.
Another day: arrange an underground-city visit or an excursion towards Soğanlı.
A suggested outline, adjust it to opening days, bookings and your pace.
Enjoy the place, not just the sights
Pause. Taste. Stay a little.
Try regional cooking in a village restaurant, and watch pottery work in Avanos. A cave hotel can become part of the experience, but ask about steps, ventilation and the exact room type.
How long to stay
Allow three nights, with extra time if a balloon flight matters to you. Stay in Göreme for convenient access to many excursions, or compare neighbouring villages for a different atmosphere.

Getting here & around
Arrive with a plan.
The usual airport gateways are Nevşehir, NAV, and Kayseri, ASR. Arrange the transfer to your particular town in advance. Valley walks and dispersed sites need separate planning, they are not all reached on one town walk.
