Paseo de Montejo

A broad avenue of grand façades opens a different chapter of Mérida’s history from the older streets around Plaza Grande.

The place and its story

Why it deserves time

Paseo de Montejo reflects the wealth and ambitions of the henequen era. Large residences and landscaped stretches give the avenue a more spacious character than the historic core. The Palacio Cantón, now associated with Yucatán’s regional anthropology museum, is an important landmark, but much of the pleasure lies in comparing buildings along the way. Some properties remain private or have changed use: an impressive façade does not necessarily indicate a museum entrance.

Slow down and notice

Three things to look for

01

Compare rooflines, balconies, stonework and garden setbacks. The houses tell a story through their differences as well as their shared scale.

02

At Palacio Cantón, check the current exhibition and access before planning an interior visit. Its museum programme gives another route into the region’s history.

03

Look at the avenue from both sides using proper crossings. A photograph taken from the roadway is not worth the traffic risk.

Make a thoughtful visit

Plan your visit

Choose a manageable section rather than assuming the entire avenue is a short stroll. Early or later daylight can make walking more comfortable, but check museum times before choosing your start. Allow ninety minutes to two hours for a leisurely architecture walk, plus any exhibition. Keep water with you and arrange a return journey if you finish farther from your accommodation than expected.

Time allowances are ATA planning suggestions, not opening hours. Confirm admission, availability and access directly before travelling.
